It sounds pretty simple but getting your team out in the fresh air and into the countryside really does the world of good.

Looking back we reflect on the countryside retreat for Gym Group’s Senior Leadership that we had the joy in organising. We were asked by Gym Group’s Ross Eldergill, Head of Performance, Development & Engagement at the time to organise a two day country retreat for his Senior Leadership team. Events Inc, as part of our venue finding service, chose the lovely Holly Bush Farm Retreat as the perfect venue.

The main objectives for the trip revolved around team building and strengthening the group’s ability to lead under pressure, along with improving communication in challenging situations. Events Inc took care of all the catering needs, including breakfast, lunch, and an evening BBQ. Our team member Charlotte also organised a well-received cookery challenge for the lucky guests.

Nestled in a peaceful rural hamlet, the group could escape their everyday routines and immerse themselves in the breathtaking countryside views. The weekend was all about pushing boundaries and stepping out of their comfort zones, which is not only motivational but also beneficial for mental health.

Tom Young, Performance Psychologist and Director at Cognite, worked with The Gym Group as an external facilitator, connecting the planned outdoor activities to the role of culture, leadership, and psychology. Reflecting on the event, Tom shared,

“From my point of view, it was amazing to be immersed in a two-day experience, and I was made to feel part of the group by the team, Ross, and Sonia’s team. This enabled me to have informal conversations and see the group in another environment.”

“I thought the cooking challenge was brilliant, and the moments of sharing and vulnerability during the sessions really stood out to me.”
